Starting 2012 on literally a high note, Skaneateles girls indoor track and field senior Kaela Fiutak soared to victory in the pole vault, highlighting Friday’s George Constantino Memorial Invitational at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena.
Fiutak would clear 9 feet 6 inches, beating Jamesville-DeWitt’s Danielle Doss, who was second with 8 feet 6 inches. Another J-D athlete, Katy Pieri, was third with 8 feet.
Overall, Skaneateles would tie Baldwinsville for sixth place, the Lakers and Bees each getting 25 points as J-D went to the top with 60 points and Fayetteville-Manlius (47 points) took runner-up honors.
The Lakers’ quartet of Emma Ford, Erin Tonzi, Shelby McNeilly and Taylor Woodruff would challenge in the 4×400 relay, earning second place in four minutes, 15.60 seconds as F-M won in 4:13.30 seconds. B’ville was third in 4:18.45.
Meanwhile, in the 4×800 Madeline Adams, Casey Van Slyke, Kaitlyn Neal and Julia Poorman finished third, in a clocking of 10:24.41, as F-M roared to victory in 9:34.66.
Gianna Campanile was sixth in the long jump (14 feet 3 inches), where Ford took eighth place. Tonzi was eighth in the triple jump (31 feet 2 inches) and Alana Navaroli had an eighth-place shot put toss of 25 feet 10 ¼ inches.
Skaneateles earned six points on the boys side at the Constantino meet, all from Malik Merritt getting third place in the 55-meter dash in 6.85 seconds, just behind Liverpool’s Keewan Rondinello, who won in 6.76 seconds.
The Lakers also saw Austin Amory, Patrick Biver, Dan Wolfanger and Danny Sakal rise to ninth in the 4×800 relay (9:34.72) and 10th in the 4×400 relay as Ty Winkelman, B.J. Kerr, J.J. Gregg and Nick Smolenski finished in 3:54.44.
Taylor Weyneth, unable to advance in the 55 hurdles, did get to 14th in the long jump as Biver was 13th in the triple jump.
Skaneateles will be back at SRC Arena this Friday for the Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational.
