Having a full roster provided immediate benefits for the Skaneateles wrestling team.
The Lakers lost most of the contests on the mat in last Wednesday’s season opener against Jordan-Elbridge, yet still emerged with a comfortable 54-31 victory over the Eagles.
Skaneateles put out a wrestler for all 15 matches. J-E only did so for six of them, and the resulting forfeits accounted for all of the Lakers’ points.
Nevan Rourke (99 pounds), Max Collier (106 pounds), Josh Brillo (113 pounds) and Brad Ditch (120 pounds) gained forfeits, as did Andrew Newton at 132 pounds and Jon Marshall at 138 pounds.
This also continued in the higher weight classes, where Jacob Kipp (182 pounds), Cooper Pitman (220 pounds) and Garrett Navaroli (285 pounds) won without having to take the mat. Adam Notarpole did wrestle, at 145 pounds, where he lost a 7-4 decision to Doug Smith.
The Lakers would face much more competition on Saturday, at the Portville Tournament near Olean, where it would pick up 120 points to finish ninth.
Navaroli won the title at 285, pinning Bucktail’s Rich Eldred in 54 seconds in the championship match. Russell Burkhardt got third place at 160 pounds when he pinned James Green (Allegany-Limestone) in 1:45.
Brillo and Tyler Saunders (126 pounds) both had fourth-place efforts. Collier pinned Destiny Weatherwax (Avoca) in 32 seconds) and Pitman took 42 seconds to pin Josh Jenks (Filmore) to get fifth place, while Connor Gray (170 pounds) earned the same spot by beating Allegany-Limestone’s Tyler Shaffer. Andrew Newton was sixth at 126 pounds.
Another busy week awaits the Lakers as it visits West Genesee on Tuesday, is home Thursday to face Marcellus and goes to the Falcon Duals at Fabius-Pompey on Saturday.
