Jamesville-DeWitt and Mexico soccer players came together for the second annual Coaches vs. Cancer games Saturday, Oct. 1. Players sold teal colored t-shirts to raise more than $2,300 for the American Cancer Society.
JV’s JD soccer coach Paul Krause said the idea for the event came to him last year as he watched his older sister, Sally A. Lock, undergo a second round of chemotherapy for ovarian cancer.
“I felt I needed to do something for her,” he said.
Lock lost her fight with cancer that December; this year’s game was named in her memory.
“The amount of cooperation with the JD community and the students have been overwhelming,” Krause said. “The JD soccer players went out and sold more than 300 shirts in school and throughout the neighborhoods. The Mexico teams also sold shirts in their community.”
Krause, a computer technician for the JD school district, said his goal in hosting the event is to show his soccer players that they can contribute to the fight against cancer. To date, more than $4,700 has been raised for the American Cancer Society through the local Coaches vs. Cancer effort.
