Without too much difficulty, the Skaneateles girls volleyball team shook off its Sept. 29 loss to Marcellus and roared through its pair of opponents in the first full week of October.
First, the Lakers visited Liverpool last Monday night. Despite owning a solid 6-2 record, the Warriors were never in the contest as Skaneateles swept them 25-15, 25-8, 25-19.
Julianna Augustine backed up her eight kills with 11 digs. Joanna Dean chimed in with seven kills, three blocks, three digs and two aces.
On the back line, Colleen Cargile, with 12 assists, and Sidney Lawson, with nine assists, continued to effectively split duties. Melissa Severance finished with seven digs.
As it turned out, a match with Westhill 24 hours later proved more difficult. This other group of Warriors hung in there through the first two sets, though Skaneateles claimed them by 25-15 and 25-20 margins.
Then Westhill won the third set 25-22, and again stayed close in the fourth set before the Lakers put it away 25-20.
Lawson (10 assists) and Cargile (nine assists, four digs) set up points for Augustine, who put together six kills, three blocks and 14 digs. Dean added seven digs as Severance and Natalie Roche both got four digs.
These were the first two of four straight road matches for the Lakers, who go to Solvay and LaFayette next week before appearing Oct. 15 in the Dig Pink Tournament, raising money for breast cancer research.
