Onondaga County Sheriff Kevin Walsh has announced that an arrest has been made in the hit and run that claimed the life of 19-year-old Joseph Ozimek early Wednesday morning.
Aaron Sakran, 19, of Inverrary Drive, Liverpool, was expected to be arraigned on charges of criminally negligent homicide, a Class E felony, between 10 and 10:30 p.m. Thursday in Clay Town Court. He also faces charges of leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident, a Class D felony, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree, a misdemeanor, and driving on the shoulder of the roadway, a violation.
Sakran was charged at his home after deputies tracked down his family vehicle, a 2004 Chrysler Sebring, based on information provided to them. Upon further investigation, deputies learned that he was at the Wegmans store on Route 57 near John Glenn Boulevard around 12:15 a.m. According to deputies, he left the parking lot of the store and struck Ozimek as he was walking home from work at McDonald’s near the intersection of Route 57 and Willowbrook Drive.
Autopsy results are expected to reveal whether Ozimek died on impact or if he died later of his injuries. Sgt. John D’Eredita of the sheriff’s department said he did not know when autopsy results would be available.
