The epic win streak held by the Fayetteville-Manlius girls tennis team was set to get challenged again Monday by West Genesee, with first place in the CNY Counties League on the line, too.
As the tune-up, the Hornets shut out Oswego 7-0 on Friday afternoon. Neither Kara Goldberg nor Adair Douglas lost a game in their singles matches, while Meghan Muraco put together a 6-3, 6-2 sweep of Taylor Bowman. In doubles, the Hornets lost just three games in eight sets.
CBA had no trouble in last Monday’s match against East Syracuse-Minoa,, shutting out the Spartans in a 7-0 decision.
Between them, the singles trio of Olivia Messineo, Colleen Cavanaugh and Amanda Ojugbeli never lost more than two games in any set of their wins over, respectively, Samantha Lobello, Caitlin Underwood and Tess Eastman.
Moving to doubles, Meghan Macri and Jessica Prucha worked hard in a 6-2, 7-6 win over Olivia Bradley and Linh Lam. Jenna Bartolotti and Shannon Fitch beat Carly Eaton and Jaqueline Moshier 6-2, 6-3. The teams of Shilpa Kamani-Becky Scullin and Evie Lopoo-Olivia Rotondo also won in two sets.
Rain and weather kept the Brothers off the court until Friday, when it beat Cortland 7-0. To preserve that shutout, Anna Kambhampaty and Sarah Roberts needed three sets to beat Oksana Salashnaya and Annie Steven 6-0, 3-6, 6-3. Kamani and Scullin went to a second-set tie-breaker to finish off Maddison Dorward and Devon Tennant 6-0, 7-6.
Jamesville-DeWitt took out Chittenango 6-1, fueled by a singles sweep. In a three-set battle, Rea Puka rallied past Ami Petosa 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Natalie Antosh fought off Marie Perriello 7-5, 7-6. Hannah Stefl handled Kourtney Wilson 6-0, 6-3.
Mary Miller and Karley Platenik needed a third-set tie-breaker to squeak past Katie Brant and Shelby Hogan 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. By that same tight margin, Amanda Lee and Elena Marchetti-Bowick fell to Camen Hunn and Alyssa Mroczek 6-1, 4-6, 7-6, but the teams of Katie Cieplicki-Kyrin Pollock and Hali Greenhouse-Lexi Lerman both won in two sets.
On Friday, J-D topped Mexico by that same 6-1 margin, Lee having the toughest singles match but still beating Alinda Dygert 7-6, 6-2. Pollock and Puka both prevailed in straight sets, with Marchett-Bowick and Stefl fighting past Jamie Wallace and Brooke Willis 6-0, 4-6, 7-5. Greenhouse and Lehrman had a 6-1, 5-7, 10-7 win over Sam Hillman and Kelsi Simpeliar.
Manlius-Pebble Hill was also back in action Friday, beating Fulton 6-1. Emily Barclay and Hannae Lee had already won in singles when Alex Verbeck came from behind to beat Faith Montgomery 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Also in three sets, Grace Allyn and Alaina McGinley got past Rachel Guernsey and Dallaslyn Lamb 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. Elizabeth Clarkson and Sarah Malavenda trailed early, but got a 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 victory over Anna Guernsey and Caitlin Lavoie.
Bishop Grimes lost to Westhill, 5-2, getting both of its points in doubles. Danielle Erwin and Mackenzie Thomson rallied past Adrianna Carello and Bridget Sherlock 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Amelia Heiselman and Erannan Shattuck beat Casey Hagen and Selina Scutari 7-6, 6-1. The Warriors won every other match in straight sets.
The Cobras lost 6-1 to Marcellus on Friday, with Heiselman nad Shattuck preventing the shutout by beating Holly Grosholz and Renee Poullott 7-6, 7-5.
