Led again by Anthony Lupia, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys cross country team beat nine other entrants in the large-school portion of Saturday’s E.J. Herrmann Invitational at Proctor Park in Utica.
Lupia took the individual race in 17 minutes, 18.5 seconds, more than 10 seconds ahead of Broadalbin-Perth’s Justin Ferguson, as the Northstars, with 22 points, easily outlated B-P (59 points) for team honors.
Behind Lupia, Neil Gill worked his way to third place in 17:37.2. Paul DeGennaro, in fifth place in 18:08.3, led a charge where Bryan Junod was sixth (18:11.5) and Matt Crough was seventh in 18:22.6. Colin Greenseich added a 12th-place effort in 18:36.1.
Meanwhile, in the girls large-school race in Utica, CNS had 50 points, beating everyone except Holy Names (Albany), who finished in front with 37 points.
Individually, Jackie Halstead managed a second-place time of 20:28.1, exactly 20 seconds behind Holy Names’ Leah Triller (20:08.1), while Nicole Watterud got fifth place in 20:44.1. Taylor Parry was ninth, in 20:56.6, while Katie Laris landed in 12th place in 21:09.9. Marissa Colburn rounded out the scoring in 22nd place (22:30.2) as Jamie Leone was 31st, in 23:01.6.
Liverpool’s cross country teams made the short trip north and saw both of its teams compete in Saturday’s Baldwinsville Invitational. In the Large School division, the girls Warriors were fourth in a field of 13, with 98 points, while the boys Warriors were eighth with 134 points.
Caroline Dieffenderfer, in a time of 19:33, was 13th, five seconds ahead of teammate Kaitlyn McNamara in 14th place. Abby McNamara ran to 20th place in 20:06, with Morgan Mahoney 21st in 20:13. Behind them, Jessica Turner was 32nd (20:32) and Lindsay Thiel was 36th, with Rebecca Murray in 43rd place.
Anthony Ostuni led the boys Warriors as he was 19th in 16:32.68, just ahead of Drew Henry (16:35.62), who was 21st. Travis Chewning-Kulick was 35th in 16:52.27, with Anthony Romano (17:03.78), Kevin Abel (17:05.78), Adam Zinger (17:12.02) and Connor Buck (17:15.78) close behind.
Just prior to that, the Warriors swept last Wednesday’s head-to-head meet against Utica Proctor, beating the Raiders 21-48 on the boys side and 15-50 on the girls side.
In the boys race, Ostuni held off Henry by one second, winning in a time of 17:01 as Henry (17:02) settled for the runner-up spot.
After Proctor’s Yaya Adam (17:19) and Zakaria Adam (17:29) were third and fourth, respectively, Abel got fifth place in 17:32. Kevin Rudd (17:39) and Romano (17:48) were sixth and seventh, respectively, as Zinger was ninth in 17:53 and Buck (17:54) was 10th.
Dieffenderfer ran away from the girls field against Proctor, finishing in 20:12, nearly a minute and a half ahead of Turner (21:26) in second place.
Kaitlyn McNamara, in third place (21:40), beat Abby McNamara by five seconds for that spot, with Mahoney (21:54) in fifth. Connie Torres (22:00), Murray (22:10) and Lindsey Phiel (22:15) rounded out a top-eight sweep as Nicole Barrett (23:25) also ran well.
