Local artists Erin Davies and Sonya Parrish bring their newest collaborative painting exhibition, Happy Accidents, to the Red House Art Center’s Joan Lukas Rothenburg Gallery from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 16. The four-week exhibit will run through July 16.
The series of co-painted pieces feature Latex Resist, a preservation process using liquid latex. Layers of the material are poured over the painting, forming a rubber film that can be peeled away. Designated areas are preserved before the painting is covered with more latex layers, colors, and shapes. After unwanted layers are peeled back, the piece more resembles a print than a painting.
One of the duo’s largest exhibition pieces takes advantage of Latex Resist’s hands-on approach, inviting gallery guests to peel layers away to reveal the finished painting underneath.
Parrish and Davies will briefly discuss their collaborative process at 7 p.m. Following the artists’ talk is a screening of the film “Living Proof,” co-directed by Davies and filmmaker Kalima Young. Based on the real life stories of 12 LGBTQ youth from Baltimore, Md., “Living Proof” inspires young people to be the hero in their own lives. Both the reception and the screening are free and open to the public.
