Van Buren officials have set the date for a public hearing regarding a joint consolidation agreement between the Warners Fire District and Memphis Fire Protection District.
In an effort to provide better, more efficient services, the two fire departments have been talking consolidation since 2009 and are ready to act on those discussions. Both the Warners and Memphis fire departments provide protection to residents in portions of the towns of Van Buren and Camillus. The proposed consolidation will affect residents located in the present Memphis Fire District in the town of Camillus, specifically Canal Road, Bennetts Corners Road, Bitters Road and Gillie Brook Road.
There is an estimated $6,000 in savings combining the departments’ budgets. Memphis would also benefit from shared membership (Memphis currently has seven members, while Warners has 38 members).
The public hearing will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday June 28 at the Camillus Town Hall on Genesee Street should the Camillus Town Board approve the resolution for a public hearing. The Van Buren and Camillus boards will be present for the hearing, as well as the Memphis Fire Department Board of Directors and the Warners Fire District’s Fire Commissioners.
