Duke meets Mae
“Belle of the Nineties,” a film set in 1890s New Orleans, will be screened by the Syracuse Cinephile Society at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 16, at the Spaghetti Warehouse.
Starring Mae West, the 1934 flick features Duke Ellington and his Orchestra accompanying Mae on “St. Louis Woman” and “Memphis Blues.”
“The musicians are shown quite a bit playing in the pit,” says Cinephile spokesman Gerry Orlando. “Duke doesn’t have any lines in the film, but there’s great footage of him playing.”
Directed by Leo McCarey, “Belle of the Nineties” also stars Roger Pryor, Johnny Mack Brown and Katherine DeMille.
Spaghetti Warehouse is located at 689 N. Clinton St., near Syracuse’s Inner Harbor. Admission to each Cinephile screening costs $3, or $2.50 for Cinephile members. For dinner reservations, call 475-1807.
