The annual “Painting of the Stripe” ceremony, one of the best-known preparations for the Syracuse St. Patrick’s Parade, will begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday March 11 at the corner of South Salina and Water streets.
Grand Marshal Syracuse Police Department Capt. Richie Walsh and St. Patrick’s Parade Chair Janet Higgins will paint the stripe while Common Councilor Patrick J. Hogan (2nd District) will serve as master of ceremonies.
South Salina Street, between Washington Street and Erie Boulevard West, will be closed from about 9 to 10:15 a.m. for the ceremony.
Refreshments and performances by the Rince Na Sonas School of Irish Dance, the Butler-Sheehan School of Irish Dance, the McDonald- Ashford Academy of Irish Dance and the Johnston School of Irish Dance will be available following the stripe-painting in the Atrium at City Hall Commons.
Mayor Stephanie Miner and County Executive Joanie Mahoney will also present a proclamation for Irish-American Heritage Day to Higgins.
The following day, Saturday March 12, the 29th Annual Syracuse St. Patrick’s Parade will kick off at noon in Clinton Square and follow the green route down South Salina Street.
