A boater’s safety course will be offered from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays June 29 and July 6 at the Willow Bank Yacht Club on Forman Street in Cazenovia. Youth between the ages of 10 and 17 who want to operate a motorboat in New York State must successfully complete this boater’s safety course and receive an operator’s certificate. The course is not required for those 18 or older, but all persons (no matter what age) who want to operate a personal watercraft (jet ski) are also required to take this course, pass the exam and obtain a certificate.
The course follows a state-mandated outline and covers topics such as rights-of-way, safety equipment, water skiing procedures and unlawful practices. Both sessions of the course must be attended and an exam passed at the completion of the course in order to receive the certificate.
The course is being sponsored by the Cazenovia Lake Association, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Madison County, Willow Bank Yacht Club and the Madison County Sheriff’s Department in association with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
There is no fee for the course and all materials needed will be provided but those interested must pre-register. Interested persons should contact Anne King at 692-4868 and leave a message with their name, number of people to register and contact phone number.
