On her third try, the Liverpool girls lacrosse team’s new head coach, Elizabeth Acee, finally earned a place in the win column.
What’s more, the Warriors accomplished this against its biggest rival, Cicero-North Syracuse, using a steady and relentless attack to beat the Northstars 17-10 last Tuesday night at Solvay’s Earl Hadley Stadium.
Playing its “home” games for the second year in a row at Solvay, Liverpool shook off early defeats to Fayetteville-Manlius and Baldwinsville by winning most of the draws and turning it into goals, taking an 8-4 lead by halftime.
That continued in the late going, with Kathleen Conese setting the pace as she earned five goals and one assist. Kristina Lombard scored three times, while Allison Flood and Kayla DeAngelis got two goals apiece. Mary Fadden, Brianna Mancini, Meg Sardella and Ashleigh Caruso had single goals. Tess Tracy made 13 saves, nearly twice the total of Northstars counterpart Stephanie Reynolds.
On CNS’s side, its production improved from an April 1 loss to West Genesee. Emily Bryerton, Rachel Bowles, Katie Jachim and Jamie Ryan each had two goals, while Kristi Thompson and Sarah Bowles earned single tallies.
The Northstars would recover Thursday and pick up its first win of the season, taking out Henninger/Nottingham in a 14-8 decision.
Explosive in its attack, CNS seemed to do whatever it wanted in the first half, bolting out to a 10-3 lead. By the time it was done, Rachel Bowles had five goals, while Bryerton found the net four times. Thompson had two goals as Jachim got a goal and two assists. Ryan and Sarah Bowles earned single goals.
Liverpool would make it back-to-back wins on Friday, pulling out a dramatic 13-12 decision over Oswego, again on the Solvay turf.
There was little separation throughout the game. The Warriors led, 6-5, at halftime, but could not get away as Amanda D’Amico, Taylor Giglio (three goals each) and Maia Czarnecki (two goals) led the Buccaneers’ push.
Only when Conese pushed in a goal with 1:56 left in regulation did Liverpool pull in front for good. Both Conese and Allison Flood finished with four goals as Caruso, Morgan Beaty, Andrea Flood, Nina Tassone and Brianna Mancini earned single tallies. Anna Daucher and Meg Sardella earned assists.
Now the Warriors would face defending Class A champion West Genesee on Tuesday before back-to-back weekend games against Nichols and Lancaster, visiting from the Buffalo area. CNS visits Central Square and Oswego later this week.
