Bestselling author, architect and cultural visionary Sarah Susanka, who leads a movement that is redefining the American home, will speak at the Cazenovia Forum at 7 p.m. Thursday March 11 at the Catherine Cummings Theatre, 9 Lincklaen St., Cazenovia. The event is free and no reservations or tickets are required.
Susanka’s lecture will be titled “The Not So Big Life – Making Room for What Really Matters.”
Susanka is the author of six best-selling books, starting with her first in 1998, The Not So Big House, in which she philosophically imparts what is wrong with the way we think of houses today, and what we could do differently. She encourages homeowners and design professionals to focus on quality rather than quantity – what makes us feel comfortable rather than what impresses the neighbors.
Her “build better, not bigger” approach to residential design has been embraced across the country and her “Not So Big” philosophy has sparked international dialogue. In 2007, she wrote The Not So Big Life, which looks at what is really missing in our lives and how to do something about it.
Copies of Susanka’s books will be available for purchase at the event. More information about her can be found at susanka.com.
Susanka is a sought-after resource by industry groups and members of the media. Professional organizations, including the American Institute of Architects and the National Association of Home Builders, regularly ask her to address local and national conferences. Susanka has shared her insights with “The Oprah Show,” “Charlie Rose,” USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and more. In February 2001, Fast Company named her to their debut list of “Fast 50” innovators whose achievements have helped to change society – an honor preceded by her selection as a “top newsmaker” for 2000 by Newsweek magazine and an “innovator in American culture” in 1998 by U.S. News & World Report.
This is the 14th event in the Cazenovia Forum lecture series, which was founded in 2006 to promote discussion and understanding of critical issues facing our nation and the world today. The Forum’s events are made possible by large and small donations from local residents and foundations. Further information can be found on the organization’s website at cazenoviaforum.com.
