Skaneateles swimmers win Class C title

Once again, the Skaneateles girls swim team found itself atop of the pack when all the scores were added up at last Friday’s Section III Class C championship meet.

With a total of 319.5 points, the Lakers edged past Lowville, who took second with 311.5 points. Thousand Islands was third (238 points) and Holland Patent (220 points) fourth.

The Class C issue was in doubt until the last event, the 400 freestyle relay. There, Sarah Sawyer, Holly Ross, Nikki Cole and Rachael DeWitt got together and, with a time of 4:01.70, beat Lowville (4:04.75) by more than three seconds to prevail.

The Lakers’ sectional work got off to a terrific start when Kaela Fiutak went out and took fourth place in the diving competition, first among Class C divers.

Amid stars from all the leagues, Fiutak posted 347.50 points, beating most of the field. Imani Williams (Westhill/Corcoran) won with 405.60 points, with Amy Bright (Fayetteville-Manilus) second and Emily Deck (Whitesboro) in third. Among the Class C field, Kelly Dove was sixth with 196.35 points.

Then, in the swimming events, DeWitt worked her way to second in the 200 individual medley in 2:27.85, just before Cole did the same in the 50 freestyle, claiming second (26.19 seconds) behind Lowville’s Ashley Panowicz (26.09 seconds).

DeWitt also was second in the 500 freestyle in 5:38.17, just behind Manlius Pebble-Hill’s Lisle Anderson (5:36.83), and helped the Lakers get second in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:50.68 behind Lowville (1:49.84).

Sawyer worked her way to fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:10.88) and 200 freestyle (2:14.65), with Brigid Clary sixth in the 200 IM (2:37.52) behind DeWitt and sixth in the 100 backstroke (1:13.11), too. Paige Williams was fourth (1:17.97) in the 100 breaststroke.
