Better stage view among improvements at weekly rock’n’roll block party
For the past three years thousands of Central New York rock’n’roll fans poured into the Inner Harbor for loud tunes and cold brews every Thursday evening at the Inner Harbor Block Party.
The parties rock on this year but at a new location lending it a new name. The Market Block Party kicked off with music by Under the Gun, The Reissues and Adem Bingham on May 14, at the Central New York Regional Market, 2100 Park St., across from the Amtrak station on the city’s North Side.
Promoters Stacey Waterman and Mike Banks of Waterbanks Event Co. have weathered an initial series of complaints from partiers who preferred the grassy amphitheater at the harbor-side location, but the new location also has its plusses.
For one thing, the Regional Market is much more accessible and offers plenty of close, convenient parking, plus tents and covered pavilions in case of rain.
“We have a larger area, so more people can come out,” Banks said. “We’re not as cramped as we were at the Inner Harbor. But the nice thing about this is that it’s easily accessible from Route 81, the north side of the city, Liverpool, and there’s plenty of centralized parking.”
And, although the market’s ground is asphalt rather than lawn, the stage is bigger and offers spectacular sight-lines for thousands rather than for the few hundred who grabbed the bleacher seats at the harbor.
The Market Block Party music rings out from 6 to 10 p.m. Thursdays through Sept. 10.
This week’s groups are Sammy-winning hard rockers Dead Rose and twangy tipplers Whiskey Mae on May 28; then 50/50, Kane and Just Joe on June 4.
Food and beverages are available for sale. Block Party-goers must be 18 years old to enter and 21 to drink.
Persons ages 17 and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
Band schedules are subject to change without notice.
