Back home at the Morrisville State IcePlex on Friday night, the state Division II no. 1-ranked Cazenovia ice hockey team confronted Hamilton and had a tough chore — but still got it done, fighting past the Emerald Knights 3-1.
In the pivotal second period, Cazenovia, already up 1-0, added two more goals to counter Hamilton’s lone tally from B.J. Drozynski.
Though thwarted many times by Emerald Knights goalie Brandon Rush, who made 39 saves, the Lakers still had Carter Franz score twice and Brian Gara also land a goal.
Sean Cannizzaro, Sam Lewis, Ben Lewis and Seth Goldacker each had one assist.
This provides the set-up for one of the biggest games in Cazenovia hockey history — a Wednesday-night showdown between the no. 1 Lakers and no. 2 New Hartford at New Hartford Recreation Center. Led by Mike Zalewski, the Spartans are 10-2, 5-0 in league play. The Lakers also have back-to-back weekend games against Utica Proctor and Sweet Home at the IcePlex, too.
