With holiday tournament activity in the past, the Westhill and Solvay girls volleyball team resumed their respective places in the OHSL Liberty division.
The Warriors ran into defending Class B champion Marcellus last Monday night and absorbed a four-game loss to the Mustangs.
Beaten 25-17 in the opener, Westhill got even by squeaking out the second game 25-23. Each of the next two games proved close, too, but Marcellus won them 25-21 and 25-23.
Erika Thomas worked on the back line, earning 14 assists. Caitlin Coleman had six kills, with Meghan Rathbun and Courtney Price each finishing with four kills and Rathbun adding four blocks. Samantha Vulcano (21 assists) and Becca Eddy (11 kills) led the Mustangs’ effort.
For its part, Solvay had to take on Homer last Monday night and emerged with a 25-18, 25-16, 25-13 loss to the Trojans.
Brittini Casimiro still had time to earn nine assists, plus three kills. Calla Bakowski had four kills and four blocks, while Shannon Slowik also had four kills. On the Trojans’ side, McKenna Riley had 19 assists (she has more than 1,000 for her career) and Alysha Camp had seven kills.
This followed the Bearcats going 4-2 in its own Christmas Clash Tournament, finishing second in the Blue Pool behind Tully, who went 5-1. Westhill was 2-4, falling to Homer 25-23, 25-23 in the consolation bracket.
Skaneateles won the Orange division with a 6-0 mark, with LaFayette second. Solvay lost the semifinal to the Lakers and tied Tully for third place as Skaneateles went on to beat LaFayette for the title.
Ashley Hunter gained the Bearcats’ lone spot on the All-Tournament team, with Ryan Merle (Skaneaeteles) and Kelsey Gates (LaFayette) sharing MVP honors. Erin McGraw was Westhill’s All-Tournament representative.
