Both the Jamesville-DeWitt and Christian Brothers Academy girls indoor track and field teams contended for high honors during Monday night’s Jack Morse Relays at Manley Field House.
When it was all done, the Red Rams, with 38 points, had tied Cicero-North Syracuse for second place, just ahead of the Brothers’ total of 34 points. Both trailed Liverpool, who won with 61 points.
J-D worked ahead by dominating field events. In the high jump, Natalie Mannion and Margaret Fuller combined to clear 9 feet 6 inches, tying Liverpool for that top spot.
Also, the Red Rams won the 1,600 sprint medley, with Mannion, Linsay Royer, Amanda Tan and Eileen Cody grabbing the title in 4:36.37, more than six seconds clear of the field.
Fuller and Marae Tearney got combined long jumps of 29 feet 10 1/4 inches, just behind the Fayetteville-Manlius tandem of Alex Seabury and Heather Martin, who won by going 29 feet 11 1/2 inches
Tearney and Marisa Colcavecchio had total throws of 56 feet 5 3/4 inches for second place in the shot put, just behind Henninger (56 feet 9 1/4 inches), while Colcavecchio topped 8 feet for fourth place in the pole vault.
CBA’s main marks included the distance medley relay, where Carol Giblin, Rachel Zajdel, Melissa Zajdel and Katie Brislin won in 12:54.53, the only team to break 13 minutes in the field. No one else came close.
Working in the 4×800 relay, the Brothers had Giblin, Rachel Zajdel, Michaela Gildemeyer and Julia Quigley finished in 10:23.73, more than 12 seconds ahead of runner-up Liverpool.
As for the sprint medley, Melissa Zajdel joined Edie Douglas, Gildemeyer and Ashley Lettney to finish in 4:42.84, second to J-D. Bettie Etheridge and Natalie Sportelli combined for fourth in the long jump, going 28 feet 11 1/4 inches between them.
F-M’s Seabury also was involved in the distance medley, where Colleen Mulvihill, Gennie Ariotti and Jessica Marini got fourth place in 13:43.17.
Not content with a strong girls finish, J-D also had a great showing in the boys version of the Morse Relays, tying Marcellus for fourth place with 20 points. CNS won with 52 points.
David Salbert won the long jump among individuals, going 20 feet 5 1/4 inches, and he teamed with Adam Tyson (fourth, 19 feet 11 1/4 inches) to win that event, the combined distance of 40 feet 4 1/2 inches well clear of the field.
Elsewhere, in the 4×800 relay, the Red Rams ran to second place. Max Smith, Austin Davis, Tim Kendrick and Bumkuth Jiak got a time of 8:47.34. Tully won in 8:44.08.
