Having earned enough respect to move to the no. 6 spot in the state Class D rankings, the Hamilton girls basketball team strove to keep itself undefeated as the 2009 portion of its schedule got underway.
The Emerald Knights were close to flawless in the first half of last Monday’s game against Stockbridge Valley, leading to a 54-23 romp over the Indians to make it nine wins in a row.
It was the second quarter before Stockbridge even managed a basket. Hamilton’s 15-0 shutout in the first quarter set a decisive tone for the rest of the night.
In fact, the margin got to 51-12 before the starters sat in the fourth quarter. By then, Jess Brawn, with her 18 points, had established her credentials once more, offering help as Kylie Martin got 10 points. Jordan Peterson earned nine points, with Katie Weeks adding six points. Hillary Hanson and Sara Whyatt each got five points.
This set up a key game on Saturday against New York Mills, a team Hamilton had struggled with in years past before 2,000-point scorer Samantha Szkotak graduated in 2008.
