Though far ahead of last season’s effort, the Jordan-Elbridge girls basketball team still had a difficult time getting through the first full week of 2009.
Going to Hannibal last Monday night, the Eagles had a great start, but could not sustain it during a 48-44 loss to the Warriors.
Hannibal had just beaten Tully in the finals of J-E’s own holiday tournament, but the Eagles never got to play them until now.
All through the first three periods, the two sides traded the lead in close quarters, with neither team able to make a prolonged run.
J-E and Hannibal went to the fourth quarter still tied, 32-32, but the Eagles went on a big run to start that final period, leading by as much as eight.
Somehow, the Warriors turned it around, grabbing the lead down the stretch with Tabatha Severika’s 3-pointer and keeping it through Taylor Sorrell’s clutch free throws.
Molly Hourigan, with 12 points, led a balanced J-E attack where Liz Caspari had nine points, with Katie Dungey and Aimee Briggs each scoring eight points. Jamie Perry, with 13 points, led Hannibal’s effort for much of the night.
On Thursday night, J-E pays a visit to Buckley Gym to face defending Class B-2 champion Cazenovia.
