Starting 2009 in a positive way, the Chittenango wrestling team won on its home mat Saturday afternoon, taking out New Hartford by a score of 43-21.
To be sure, it helped that the Bears gained four forfeits, but it still had to win a fair share of matches to put the Spartans away.
Kyle Schiedo, at 189 pounds, had the shortest time on the mat, taking just 51 seconds to pin Patrick Parker. This came after Jacob Jayson, wrestling at 160 pounds, earned his pin over Dan Mercurio 23 seconds into the third period.
Later in the meet, John Regan (119 pounds) dominated Jack Mulvihill in a 14-2 decision, while Wes Blanding (130 pounds) shut out Chris Broccoli 6-0.
Zak Jackson (145 pounds), Karl Chappell (152 pounds), Ryan Schiedo (171 pounds) and Cole Farsaci (125 pounds) didn’t have to take the mat, all of them claiming forfeits.
Three other times, Chittenango lost close decisions. Anthony Galli, in the opening match at 140 pounds, fell to R.J. Broccoli 6-3, while Josh Wright (215 pounds) took a 4-3 loss to Dylan Hoffman and Gunnar Brooks (125 pounds) fought hard in a 4-2 defeat to Brandon Delmonte.
On Wednesday night, the Bears have an OHSL Freedom division meet with East Syracuse-Minoa before going to Saturday’s Leo. J. Sammon Tournament in Ilion.
