Through eight games, no one had been able to top the Fayetteville-Manlius ice hockey team, but that unbeaten run is now over.
Cortland/Homer proved to be the surprising conqueror, coming to Cicero Twin Rinks last Tuesday and putting together a 4-2 victory over the Hornets.
Neither team scored until a wild third period where the Eagles’ main line took over. Matt Porter scored twice, as Carl Zimmerman and Paul Zimmerman each had a goal and two assists to push Cortland/Homer in front.
Matt Esposito tried to answer for F-M with one goal and an assist on Mike Wilson’s tally, while Trevor Chase also picked up an assist.
In goal, Mike Poppleton made 20 saves, but three different Cortland/Homer netminders — Nicolo Baldarotta, Chris Broyles and Brett Kash — combined for 30 saves to produce an upset.
This was not what F-M had in mind, a week before defending Division I champion West Genesee brought its 12-0 mark to the Twin Rinks for a Division I first-place showdown.
