In its venture to the Fabius-Pompey Tournament, the Cazenovia boys basketball team hoped that it would get into the win column after missing in six previous tries.
And while the Lakers fell short in the opening round, it did not do so in last Tuesday’s consolation game, finally ending its long skid by beating Cincinnatus 57-32.
Right from the opening tip, the Lakers took out a month’s worth of frustration on the overmatched Lions, zooming to a 23-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.
By halftime, the margin was 36-13, and while Cazenovia cooled off quite a bit in the second half, it never got a serious threat from Cincinnatus, either.
Max Kellish led the Lakers with 13 points. Zack Golden produced 10 points, while Colin Hill earned nine points and Ben Romagnoli got six points. Colin Williams added five points.
A day earlier, against host Fabius-Pompey in the opening round, the Lakers had too many long droughts to suffice in a 54-35 defeat.
Cazenovia managed just four points in the first quarter, giving F-P enough time to go in front. The Lakers stayed close for a while and were down just six, 33-27, before a fourth quarter where the Falcons flew away.
Hill led the Lakers with nine points, while Chris Schaffner had six points and Romagnoli got five points. Sean Emerson led F-P’s winning effort with 19 points, with Zievaun Wright adding 12 points.
The Cincinnatus win pushed the Lakers to 1-7 as it moves toward back-to-back road games this week against Bishop Grimes and Jordan-Elbridge.
