Everything the West Genesee wrestling team did at the end of 2008 was point itself toward a huge Jan. 7 showdown with Baldwinsville that might decide the CNY Counties League National division regular-season title.
The Wildcats took a major step ahead in last Tuesday’s home meet against Liverpool, earning a 39-23 victory over the Warriors to improve to 3-0 in league meets, 10-4 overall.
Each of the four matches in the lightest weight classes went in WG’s favor. That included three pins, as Jason Fitch (125 pounds) finished off Alex Sellin in 1:25 and Connor Grome, at 112 pounds, taking 11 more seconds to pin Tyler Eason.
In between them, Jason Heggelke won at 119 pounds when he pinned Dominic Lizzio 29 seconds into the second period of their match. Only Ian Coolican (103 pounds) got a decision, shutting out Johnny Goldthwaite 9-0.
Nick Marco had the most active match, at 171 pounds, outscoring Joe Pizzuto 20-12, just as Erik Krohl (135 pounds) beat Tyler Kolbasook 9-1 and Josh Cruz (152 pounds) fought his way past Matt Hathaway 8-5.
Heitham Wady (145 pounds) claimed a forfeit, but Mike Young (140 pounds) wrestled and pinned Mende Cukalevski in 1:35.
WG will not compete in any holiday tournament, giving itself a chance to rest, practice, and get into gear before B’ville comes to Camillus.
