With Ben Seketa finding his way to the record books and many other individuals standing out, the West Genesee boys swim team made it three wins in as many meets.
The Wildcats’ trip to Baldwinsville last Tuesday night was far from easy, but Seketa, with key wins in key spots, helped produce a 50-42 victory over the Bees.
To start with, Seketa engaged in a 200 freestyle classic with B’ville’s Chris Cadwell. They matched each other all the way to the wire, but Seketa touched in 1:50.35, just edging past Cadwell (1:50.92) for some key early points.
Seketa added more excitement when, in the 500 freestyle, he covered the long distance in 5:00.16 to set a new Baker High School pool record.
Not getting any time to rest, Seketa swam the third leg of a close 200 freestyle relay. Carson Elias and Kyle Crompton started it, with Rob Kotheimer getting the anchor. In a time of 1:33.51, the Wildcats beat the Bees by half a second.
Still, it came down to the 400 freestyle relay. Whoever would win here would take the meet — and Seketa, working with Crompton, Connor Agen and Pat O’Donnell, won in 3:28.60 to keep the Wildcats undefeated.
Much earlier in the meet, Elias had helped Mike Donovan, Tim Gallivan and Mike Purcell to a time of 1:45.77 in the 200 medley relay. On his own, Elias won the 200 individual medley in 2:06.99 and added a win in the 100 butterfly in 55.48 seconds.
Crompton provided WG’s other star turn in the sprint. He outraced B’ville’s Dan Ravas, 23.20 seconds to 23.77, in the 50 freestyle, then held on by a smaller margin to beat Cadwell, 50.37 seconds to 50.74, in the 100 freestyle.
O’Donnell was quick in the 100 backstroke, prevailing in 56.84 seconds, just before Gallivan earned a top time of 1:09.90 in the 100 breaststroke. The Wildcats swim again on Jan. 8, when it meets Utica Proctor.
