Still coping with the fact that it won’t play a home game until 2009, the West Genesee boys basketball team is managing the situation as well as it possibly could.
The Wildcats’ travels included a visit to the north country last Tuesday night to face Watertown, a trip that proved productive as it beat the Cyclones 58-43.
A snow postponement on Dec. 20 kept WG from hosting Oswego. Thus, the Wildcats’ first game in Camillus is not until Jan. 6, when it faces Liverpool and one-time Wildcats coach Jerry Wilcox.
Perhaps the lack of practice in the days before the game hurt WG early, as it fell behind 13-11 in the first quarter.
Once the Wildcats’ defense made proper adjustments, though, things turned around in a hurry. WG gave up just 14 total points in the next two periods, giving itself plenty of time to move in front and stay there.
Jack Conboy, with 13 points, and Conor Regin, with 12 points, led a balanced Wildcat attack. Joe Fazio, Greg Wadach and John LaValle each had six points, while Colin Monroe and Tyler Carr got five points apiece.
WG will get another big test on Monday and Tuesday at Christian Brothers Academy’s annual Bottar-Leone Holiday Classic. The Wildcats face Albany CBA in the opening round, then get the host Brothers or St. John’s (Queens).
