Unlike many others, the Cazenovia girls volleyball team got just the right amount of work in place before hitting the holiday break.
First, the Lakers hosted its own tournament on Dec. 20, in between the snowstorms that crippled or rearranged sports schedules all over Central New York.
Cazenovia won Pool A, going 6-0 and sweeping all of its games against Fulton and LaFayette, two favorites in their respective classes. Marcellus finished 6-0 to lead Pool B.
In the semifinals, Fulton bounced back and beat Marcellus, while Cazenovia defeated Watertown. In the championship match, the Red Raiders topped the Lakers in a 25-22 decision.
Leah McAleer and Alissa Easterly made the All-Tournament team on the Lakers’ behalf, but it was Fulton’s Brianna Streeter that walked away with MVP honors. Marcellus beat Watertown 27-25 in the consolation match.
Shaking off that brief setback, Cazenovia returned to OHSL Liberty division action last Tuesday night and swept Jordan-Elbridge 25-15, 25-16, 25-22 to improve to 7-1 on the season.
Easterly, with nine assists, and Megan Robinson, with seven assists, shared back-line duties. McAleer had five kills, with Alex Crawford adding four kills. Sarah Race (two kills, four assists) and Devyn Speer (three kills) helped, too.
Cazenovia would play again Monday in the Fulton Tournament, with a chance to get back at the Red Raiders if all went well. League play resumes next Monday against Hannibal.
