Led by Jamie Sacco and Todd Hagger, the Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling team emerged from a 10-day rest to finish among the leaders during last Saturday’s Tri-Valley Tournament at Whitesboro High School.
In the event, shortened from two days to one by winter snowstorms, the Northstars finished seventh in a field of 17 with 93 points, just half a point behind sixth-place Corcoran. South Jefferson won with 218 points.
Sacco, who wrestles at 285 pounds, started with a huge 1-0 win over Corcoran’s Elijah Graham, then pinned Ballston Spa’s Tyler Elliott in 27 seconds and took just 39 seconds to pin Brian Ervin (Verona-Verona-Sherrill) in the semifinal round.
By the time Sacco pinned Holland Patent’s Glenn Garrett late in the second period of the championship match, he had proved so impressive that he would later be named Wrestler of the Week by cnywrestling.com.
Hagger would match Sacco’s winning effort in the 140-pound category. He pinned My’Quan Pringle (Corcoran) in 58 seconds and took 2:47 to pin New Hartford’s R.J. Broccoli before going to the finals and beating Cody Frost (Morrisville-Eaton) in a 5-2 decision.
Austin Morris, at 215 pounds, made it to the finals, beating Dylan Hoffman (New Hartford) 11-7 in overtime, then Dustin Villnave (M-E) and Taylor Lalone (South Jefferson) with third-period pins. In the final, Morris lost to Corcoran’s Tyshawn Golden in a first-period fall. Kiel Dyer added a fifth-place finish at 119 pounds.
CNS will next see action on Monday and Tuesday during the Teike/Bernabi Tournament at Spencerport, near Rochester.
