As it zoomed to a 6-0 mark through a pair of one-sided victories, the Cicero-North Syracuse girls basketball team earned the no. 4 spot in the first state Class AA rankings — and also paid close attention to what other AA contenders were doing.
Much of the attention last Tuesday night centered in on the rematch of last year’s sectional final — and once again, Corcoran came out on top of Oswego, winning on its home court over the Buccaneers 59-54.
CNS didn’t mind that, for it was busy going to Auburn and displaying all kinds of quality in a 72-27 destruction of the Maroons.
On its way to a 60-18 third-quarter lead, CNS managed to get five players to score in double figures, and nearly a sixth.
Breanna Stewart and Marybeth Egan led the Northstars with 14 points apiece. Shannon Hickin worked her way to 12 points, while Kelsey Mattice earned 11 points and Brittany Denslow earned 10 points. Just behind them, Brittany Paul had nine points.
The Northstars got some unexpected rest due to the snow postponement of Friday’s game against Henninger. It now rested up before going to the New York Tournament this weekend, which starts with a Saturday opening-round match-up with Bishop Kearney.
