Through six games, the Canastota girls basketball team remains undefeated, having put together more solid performances in the week before the holiday break.
The Raiders gave a stunning display of just what it could do on the defensive side during last Monday night’s 41-17 victory over Sauquoit Valley.
For the entire night, the Indians managed just six field goals, unable to find many open looks amid swarming Canastota pressure that did not let up, even as it built a sizable lead.
Meanwhile, Liz McGinley, by scoring 15 points, nearly matched the entire Sauquoit roster by herself. Shea Foster chipped in nine points, while Alicia Hibbard earned six points.
Canastota was not as stingy during Thursday’s game at Waterville, but it still used one big run to make the difference in a 45-30 victory over the Indians.
Waterville managed just two points in the first quarter, yet kept the Raiders from getting too far away, either, as they went through the rest of the half.
Leading only by two, 16-14, at halftime, Canastota broke through against the Indians in the third quarter, outscoring Waterville 18-6, all that was needed to get clear.
McGinley stayed consistent, earning 14 points, while Hibbard picked up 10 points. Alexis Havens (six points) and Shea Foster (five points) offered the help.
The Raiders now take some well-deserved rest, not resuming until next Saturday, when it starts play at the Madison Christmas Tournament that concludes on Dec. 29.
