From nail-biting thrillers to quick pins, the Liverpool wrestling team engaged in every variety of contest during last Wednesday’s meet against Central Square.
What it all added up to, though, was success, as the Warriors beat the Red Hawks 37-30, saving its best work for the middle and higher weight classes.
Still, the best match took place at 112 pounds, a wild battle between Liverpool’s Tyler Eason and Central Square’s Alex Potts. The points proved pivotal as Eason and Potts exchanged takedowns, escapes and other moves until Eason won in a 15-14 decision.
By contrast, when Derek Eason won at 152 pounds, he pinned John Benton in 39 seconds, and Jon Miller (189 pounds) took just 44 seconds to pin Josh Zredenburg.
In all, the Warriors had four pins on the night, with Justin Thompson (125 pounds) finishing off Chris Bourassa in 1:37 and Tyler Kolbasook, at 135 pounds, getting his pin over Avery Sigle 37 seconds into the third period.
Joe Pizzuto didn’t even wrestle at 171 pounds, claiming a forfeit, but Matt Hathaway did compete at 145 pounds and dominated Nick Guerin in an 11-1 decision.
Two other decisions proved close, with Jon Goldthwaite (103 pounds) falling to Brandon Engbresten 4-2 and Brendan Capria, at 160 pounds, falling to Matt McChesney 5-2.
Liverpool goes to Camillus Tuesday night to face West Genesee before heading Central Square on Dec. 29 and 30 for the Brett Dixon Memorial Tournament.
