Following defeats in its first two meets of the season, the Fayetteville-Manlius wrestling team earned a much different result the third time around.
Going to Oswego last Wednesday night, the Hornets took control with five consecutive wins early in the meet, and hung on to beat the Buccaneers 39-21.
That early streak commenced at 140 pounds, in the second match of the meet. Ryan Kiggins took Oswego’s Zach Thompson to overtime, then got the takedown he needed for a 10-8 victory.
Remarkably, the 145-pound match also went to OT — and again F-M prevailed, as Tyler Neveldine used an escape to beat Miguel Vazquez 8-7.
The Hornets then reeled off three straight pins. Mike Mannion (152 pounds) finished off Mike Ruggio in 1:03, while Joey Lathrop (160 pounds) took 3:23 to pin Mike Hennessy and Keith Jordan, at 171 pounds, earned his pin over Mike Ruttan in 1:08.
Kyle Corbett claimed a forfeit at 215 pounds, and Thomas Quinlan (103 pounds) followed with a pin over Brian Pulver in 146. Josh Scalzetti (125 pounds) earned the last points at 125 pounds, beating Anthony Todaro 9-2.
As this was going on, East Syracuse-Minoa took a 42-27 loss to Mexico, hurt in no small part by the fact that it had to forfeit four different matches — at 103, 112, 119 and 189 pounds.
Most of those forfeits came at the end, after ESM took five of eight contested matches, plus a forfeit to Jamie Landry at 215 pounds.
Conner Webb got the Spartans on the board at 130 pounds, beating Matt Recore 9-2, with Matt Letcher (140 pounds) pinning Jordan LaBouef midway through the third period and Mike Dee (145 pounds) earning a pin over Joe Omilnowicz in 3:27.
In a pair of close battles, Louie Sharp (160 pounds) edged Andrew Scholes 11-9, just before ESM teammate Dustin Moss beat Troy Benjamin 7-6 in the 171-pound category.
