While it was far from pretty, the Chittenango boys basketball team gladly accepted any step forward that it could manage.
Going into last Tuesday’s game against Phoenix with a 1-3 mark, the Bears did not display much offense, but somehow overcame that frustration to beat the Firebirds 34-28.
Throughout the evening, as the turnovers and missed shots piled up, Chittenango and Phoenix were busy mimicking each other. They tied 11-11 in the first quarter, then managed just a handful of field goals in a drought-filled second period as they went to the break still even at 15-15.
Phoenix’s problems continued with just five points in the third quarter, allowing the Bears to go in front — where it would stay despite its own large amount of mistakes.
Cavanaugh Chaires still had 11 points, with Andy Moth adding 10 points. Mike Moon (six points) and Mike Major (five points) had the other field goals, with Dorrie Morrison (14 points) and Jon North (10 points) accounting for most of Phoenix’s offense.
