Next year will be a banner year for the town of Salina.
The town, founded in 1809, will commemorate its bicentennial next year, and town officials and volunteers are working together to plan a celebration.
We’re still really in the beginning stages of planning this, said Judy Tassone, a town resident who is heading up the effort. But we really want to bring out the history of the town of Salina. We want to really make this a big deal.
Tassone said that, in addition to the celebration, organizers are hoping to get a commemorative book published; one was published in celebration of the town’s centennial in 1909.
I just think it’s so neat, Tassone said. I think this town has a really interesting history.
Supervisor Mark Nicotra agreed.
I think the history of the town and all of that is very interesting, and I think a lot of residents do, too, Nicotra said. And as a lifelong resident, I’m really excited to be a part of something of this magnitude.
Organizers are looking for the following:
‘ ‘Historic or old photos of the town, including town landmarks or people.
‘ ‘Good stories told by older generations.
‘ ‘Historic newspapers or clippings.
‘ ‘Anything else that pertains to the town’s history.
If you have any historical photos, documents or other materials or if you’d like to help plan the celebration, contact Tassone at 457-5458 or [email protected] or Nicotra at 457-6661 or [email protected].
