The village of Camillus is moving forward with a proposed local law that would establish a registry of rental properties throughout the village and require them to be inspected by village codes enforcement.
Similar laws have been passed in recent months by other area villages including Solvay and East Syracuse.
The law requires all rental units located within the village to be added to a registration, and for each unit to be inspected by codes enforcement officers.
Village attorney Steve Primo, who has worked with other municipalities to set up similar local laws, this summer encouraged the board to develop the law and assuaged fears that the law would punish or penalize landlords.
Primo said similar concerns were raised in other municipalities but were unfounded and rental registration laws were causing relatively little upset among rental communities in other towns and villages.
The law will require property owners of rental units to register with the village, subject the properties to interior and exterior inspections by village codes officers and would help keep all rental units up to code and maintain the health and safety of village residents.
Registration of residential rental units will incur a fee of $20, for units rented for other purposes will cost $25, until Dec. 31, after which date the village board may raise the fee.
