Fans of the Cazenovia football team that venture to Buckley-Volo Field for their Saturday-afternoon ritual expects that the ritual will include the home team totally dominating the opposition.
They got their wish again last Saturday, as the Lakers made it two wins in as many weeks with a devastating performance against Sauquoit Valley that resulted in a 60-0 romp over the Warriors.
Year after year, Cazenovia had dominated the Class B ranks when it was still there. Now, having been moved to Class C South, the Lakers just keep going, as in two games (it beat Sherburne-Earlville in the Sept. 6 opener) it has outscored foes 93-6.
Anyone that came late to the game missed all the drama — if racking up 29 unanswered points in the first quarter counts as drama.
Chad Dorrance set the tone in the opening minutes by taking a handoff at the Lakers’ 40-yard line and tearing through Sauquoit defenders until he was in the end zone 60 yards later. Quarterback Carter Franz ran in for two points.
Cazenovia’s defense kept forcing the Warriors to punt, and on two consecutive possessions Laker running back Seth Goldacker would score from 21 yards out, building the margin to 22-0.
Then, just before the quarter ended, Cazenovia again drove deep into Sauquoit territory. From the Warriors’ 19, Franz threw to the end zone and found Sean Dougherty for a fourth TD in the period, and now it was 29-0. Franz, before sitting down, completed four of the five passes he threw for 102 yards.
Even though things calmed down a bit in the second quarter, Franz still found Dougherty for a 50-yard scoring connection and ran one yard for another TD. Chris Rogers went five-for-five in extra points, and the Lakers went to the locker room enjoying a 36-0 edge.
All the reserves got to shine in the second half as the offensive total built to 483 total yards. Zach Golden ran seven yards for one TD and Tom Colligan got the other, on a 16-yard run. Aside from staying perfect in PAT’s (seven-for-seven), Rogers tacked on a 24-yard field goal.
Back on the road this Saturday, the Lakers get to visit Little Falls for a 1:30 kickoff. The Mounties are 1-1, having beaten Adirondack 18-14 before falling to Frankfort-Schuyler 22-13 last weekend.
