Though it was planned in advance, it seemed rather fitting that the Chittenango girls track and field team would be the hosts for last Tuesday’s OHSL Freedom division championship meet, since it had won the regular-season title with an 8-0 league mark.
And the Bears would stay undefeated against its league foes, winning the meet with 139 points to hold off Phoenix, who took second with 118 points. Jamesville-DeWitt (92 points) and Homer (74 points) also had solid efforts.
Earning 26 points by herself, Marshay Zamlowski won the long jump, going 16 feet 10 inches, and added a title in the triple jump with a best attempt of 33 feet 3 inches. She also ran to third in the 100-meter dash in 13.17 seconds as Alyssa Giarosso finished sixth.
Kaylee Greene would also pick up 26 points. She won the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.92 seconds, then beat the field in the 400 hurdles in 1:09.59, part of a 1-2 finish with teammate Brittany Tirabassi (1:14.68).
Greene also got third (15 feet 11 inches) behind Zamlowski in the long jump, while Kristina Gorden (18.50) and Triabassi (18.53 seconds) picked up third and fourth, respectively, in the 100 hurdles.
In the 4×100 relay, Zamlowski, Greene, Giarosso and Gorden combined to win that race in a time of 52.42 seconds. Michelle Brandt, Kelly Anderson, Hannah Murphy and Bethany Macera teamed to finish second in the 4×800 relay (10:15.96) behind Homer, who won in 10:07.44.
Elsewhere on the oval, Murphy had a strong meet, running to second in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in 8:46.29. She was also fourth at 800 meters (2:37.75). Giarosso claimed third place in the 200-meter dash (27.78 seconds), while Brandt got third in the 1,500-meter run (5:14.57). Sager ran to sixth in the 3,000 and Cassie Regan took sixth in the steeplechase.
Ellen Heenan, with 1,626 points, earned third place in the five-event pentathlon. Tirabassi and Katrina Karbowniczak tied for third in the high jump, each of them clearing 4 feet 6 inches, while Heather Knapp and Kelsey Pudney tied for fourth in the pole vault (7 feet 6 inches). Darling took sixth place in both the shot put and discus.
