Mainly by taking over the field events, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys track and field team secured the CNY Counties League National division title in last Wednesday’s battle with archrival Liverpool at Bragman Stadium, beating the Warriors 82.7-58.3.
All through these contests, 1-2 finishes were the norm, including a pole vault where Eric Sykora cleared 12 feet and topped favorite Craig Barber (11 feet 6 inches) to do so.
Andy Kahl’s latest victory involved clearing 6 feet 4 inches, with Devin Martens second with 6 feet. In the triple jump, Kahl went 42 feet 8 inches and won with Eric Munoz (41 feet 2 inches) and Devin Mertens (40 feet 1 inch) close behind.
Moving over to the throwing events, Richie Lickfield took the discus, tossing it 134 feet with Jeff Crooks (120 feet 2 inches) in second place. Peter Foti, by throwing the shot put 49 feet 1 inch, beat Dan Minahan (47 feet 7 inches) for that title.
Only in the long jump did Liverpool prevail, as Munoz (20 feet 1/2 inch) could not keep up with T.J. Davis, whose leap of 22 feet 10 1/2 inches was the best in Section III this spring.
Davis, in fact, won three times, adding 100 and 200-meter titles and also nipping CNS at the wire as anchor in the 4×100 relay despite Ben Brown, Charles Haven, Devin Young and Brandon Marlow getting a time of 44.1 seconds.
Tony Rogers won the 400-meter dash in 51.7 seconds as Kahl (52.5 seconds) finished second, while Alex Neumeister took the 400 hurdles in 59.9 seconds.
Nathan MacNabb, after a second in the mile (4:39.3), teamed with Jake Whritenour, Mike Flume and Shaun Hyde to win the 4×400 relay in 3:33.91. Ty Howington got second in the 110-meter high hurdles (15.8 seconds), while Chris Buchanan ran to third in the 3,200-meter run in 10:10.9 as Liverpool teammates Ethan Hickey (10:04.84) and Bryan Picciotto (10:05.50) gained the top two positions.
