With a 5-10 record, and having struggled all season to put together runs, the Baldwinsville softball team was not given much of a chance against defending Section III Class AA champion Liverpool Wednesday afternoon.
But in a stunning turn of events, the Bees took advantage of every possible Warrior mistake and got a great pitching performance from Anna Hammill, leading to a 3-2 upset of the Warriors on Liverpool’s own home field.
Hammill didn’t start, the role falling to Morgan Campbell. But when Campbell surrendered both of Liverpool’s runs in the bottom of the second inning, Hammill stepped in — and began to shut the door.
This was especially true after a third inning where the Bees raced around the bases, seizing the opportunity as a pair of Liverpool errors turned into three runs. Carley Nicoletti and Katie Ducharme each had one RBI during this rally, with Jill Conicella and Katrina Conklin gaining runs.
In all, Liverpool committed six errors, negating the one hit (from Nicoletti) B’ville managed off Warrior pitching ace Erin Squairs.
Meanwhile, Hammill went through the last five innings and did not surrender a run against the potent Liverpool lineup. In all, the Warriors had just four hits.
This was a complete turnaround from the Bees’ 3-0 loss to Oswego the day before.
Here, the Bees were on the wrong end of Buccaneers pitcher Lauren Corradino’s no-hitter. All Corradino did was record 10 strikeouts on the way to her gem.
Meanwhile, Hammill pitched well — but only after a first inning where Oswego got all of its runs off a bases-loaded double by Marissa Canale.
