The village of Solvay is in the process of rebuilding the Highway Garage, damaged in the fall of 2007 after a water main break on Milton Avenue.
Deputy Mayor John Fall said the cost of repairing the damage to the existing building exceeded the price tag of a totally new facility.
The new garage will be aluminum-clad, and more environmentally friendly, Fall said.
There are a lot of things we’re doing in the new building to make it a green building, said Fall.
That includes recycling the present floor into material that will be used as flooring in the new garage, and having the blocks from the current garage ground and reused as sub-flooring.
Fall said the village is also attempting to keep the costs low by reselling scrap metal from the old building – so far, about $2500 has been refunded through scrap metal.
Demolition on the old building will begin within the next week or so, Fall said, and the goal is to have the new building completed no later than September.
When the garage was flooded in the fall, there was a scramble to relocate the vehicles stored there.
