Taking a big step right into the heated OHSL Liberty division race, the Jordan-Elbridge girls track and field team knocked off Westhill as part of a three-way meet last Wednesday that also involved Christian Brothers Academy.
The Eagles defeated the Warriors 77-58, just as it was topping the Brothers 81-56. Westhill, for its part, beat CBA 77-62.
This leaves J-E and Westhill both 3-1 in league meets, tied for second with Cazenovia, one point behind 4-0 Skaneateles.
With CBA’s Melissa Zajdel sweeping all three sprints (including a swift 400-meter dash of 58.7 seconds), J-E managed to pick up a few more remaining contests to go in front.
Katie Darling won twice for the Eagles, unleashing a long jump of 15 feet 10 inches and a triple jump of 33 feet 6 1/2 inches. Nicole Darling prevailed in the 800-meter run (2:34.2), while Lyndsay Hollis ran the 400 hurdles in 1:09.9. Eloise Rogers won the shot put, tossing it 27 feet 9 inches.
J-E also prevented Westhill from a relay sweep when Hollis, Katie Darling, Kim Foltz and Maggie Nuber got together and took the 4×400 in a time of 4:25.3.
For its part, the Warriors won three times in field events. Paula Sanz had a rare double, taking the pole vault (7 feet) and throwing the discus 73 feet 3 inches. Kathyrn Christensen cleared 4 feet 4 inches in the high jump.
Abby Lee worked on the oval and won the 100-meter hurdles (16.9 seconds) as Heather Clancy, Kate Powers, Katie Lenkiewicz and Catherine Coon took the 4×800 relay in 10:50.7. Cathy Butler, Liz Sheridan, Alyssa Cywilko and Sarah Daily gave Westhill a 4×100 relay title in a clocking of 1:01.3.
While all this was going on, Westhill would sweep both sides of the boys meet, improving to 4-0 in league competition as it beat J-E 102.5-38.5 and handled CBA 100-40. The Eagles beat the Brothers 89-52.
For the Warriors, Andrew Corcoran ran the mile in 4:42.4 and also took the 800-meter run in 2:06 flat, as Eric Moore (10:11.9) prevailed at 3,200 meters. Corcoran, Moore, Kevin Zych and Andrew Garofano combined to run the 4×800 relay in 8:56.9, with Garofano also beating the field in the 400 hurdles in 1:04.9.
Jesse Krell had a part in four victories for Westhill. By himself, he sprinted to wins in the 100 (11.7 seconds) and 200 (24.2 seconds), and he combined with Anthony Legnetto, Tom Fisher and Pavle Bujanovic in the 4×100 relay (47.3 seconds). That same quartet also won the 4×400 relay in 3:44.7.
Tom Welch prevailed in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet, as Matt Trendowski threw the shot put 41 feet 3 inches and Tom Trendowski unleashed a triple jump of 37 feet 8 3/4 inches.
