Even though lead concerns have closed the turf at Cicero-North Syracuse High School’s Bragman Stadium, the track oval and its surrounding facilities are still open for business.
And the boys Northstars took full advantage of this last Wednesday afternoon, controlling its meet against Henninger as it beat the Black Knights 102-39.
Ty Howington, Andy Kahl and Nathan MacNabb each had two wins. Howington needed just 15.6 seconds to take the 110-meter high hurdles and also won the 400 hurles in 1:00.7.
Kahl cleared 6 feet 4 inches in the high jump, then moved over to the triple jump and won by going 43 feet 11 inches. Kahl was also second (19 feet 8 inches) to teammate Eric Munoz (19 feet 10 inches) in the long jump.
As for MacNabb, he ran 800 meters in 2:10.9 and also prevailed in the mile in 4:50.6. Chris Buchanan completed the distance-running sweep by taking the 3,200-meter run in 9:15.6.
Craig Barber won the pole vault, clearing 12 feet as teammate Eric Sikora (10 feet 6 inches) finished second. Peter Foti tied Henninger’s Demetrius Barnes in the shot put, each throwing it 45 feet 11 inches.
Tony Rogers, who beat Jake Whritenour, 51.7 seconds to 52.1, in the 400-meter dash, teamed with Kahl, Brandon Marlow and Shaun Hyde to win the 4×400 relay in 3:36.1. Mike Perkins, Kevin Cusworth, Mike Velasco and John Smith combined to run the 4×800 relay in 9:15.6.
Henninger’s Andre Britton would stand out for his side, winning both the 100-meter dash (10.7 seconds) and 200-meter dash (22.4 seconds) and taking second (6 feet) behind Kahl in the high jump. Britton, Greg Spears, Mike Johnson and Shaquille Leggett teamed for a 4×100 relay time of 43.6 seconds to beat the CNS quartet of Brown, Marlow, Devin Young and Charles Haven (44.1 seconds).
A day later, the CNS girls team met Henninger and beat the Black Knights 95-37.
Monique Roberts, fresh off tying the Section III record in the high jump at a meet in suburban Albany the weekend before, cleared 5 feet 6 inches this time around.
Jasmine Thompson (long jump, 15 feet 10 1/2 inches) and Alana Hotchkiss (triple jump, 32 feet 10 1/2 inches) also took field events, with Thompson also running the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.5 seconds.
Taylor Wendler prevailed at 3,000 meters in 10:48.7, as Lindsay Raulli took the 1,500-meter run (4:54.4) and Christina Sakowski ran 800 meters in 2:53.8. McKaye Neumeister claimed the 400 hurdles in 1:09.9, and CNS also won the 4×100 (52.8 seconds) and 4×800 (11:48.7) relays.
Both CNS sides, though, were saving its best stuff for Saturday, and two separate meets where the teams proved dominant again.
Roberts, in particular, stood out in Saturday’s Warrior/Hawk Invitational at Central Square, where, in the five-event pentathlon, she accumulated 3,452 points, the third-best total in the event in state history.
This included Roberts clearing 5 feet 9 inches in the high jump, going 16 feet 4 inches in the long jump, running the 100-meter high hurdles in 15.4 seconds, throwing the shot put 31 feet 6 inches and running 800 meters in 2:45.6. Both Roberts’ high jump and 100 hurdles efforts beat those of the individual champions in those respective events.
As this was going on, the CNS boys team was accmulating 122 points and winning the John Arcaro Memorial Relays at Baldwinsville, as Liverpool and Corcoran tied for second with 82 points apiece.
Four times, CNS won, taking the 110 high hurdles (33.7 seconds) as Young, Whritenour, MacNabb and Brown claimed the sprint medley relay (3:40.3).
The Northstars also won the discus (231 feet 11 inches) and pole vault (23 feet 6 inches) and finished second nine different times — in the 4×400, distance medley, 3,000 steeplechase, 4×200, 4×800, 4×1,600, 4×100, shot put, 28-pound relay and triple jump. The second-place finishes, alone, added up to 72 points.
