Immediately establishing itself as the runaway favorites in the CNY Counties League American division, the Fayetteville-Manlius girls track and field team pounded its way to a sweep of West Genesee on Tuesday afternoon.
On the girls end, the Hornets dominated and won by a score of 106-36, while the F-M boys team held off the charge of the Wildcats in a 78-63 decision.
To get it moving, the F-M girls had Kathryn Buchan, Kathryn Fanning, Mackenzie Carter and Alex Chapman work together to win the 4×800 relay in a time of 9:57.8.
Chapman moved on to take the 1,500-meter run (4:48.4), while Fanning finished second, then went on to record a winning time of 2:26.1 in the 800-meter run, beating Carter by 2.6 seconds. Buchan needed 10:33.5 to beat Chapman by a full second in the 3,000-meter run.
In an exciting 4×400 relay, F-M and WG battled to the wire. Fanning and Carter joined Jessica Marini and Jordan Levy as the Hornets, in 4:19.5, beat the Wildcats by half a second. Marini, on her own, won the 400 hurdles in 1:07.6.
F-M also prevailed in the 4×100 relay as Levy, Claire Luber, Alyssa Hoyt and Lauren Ruggiero combined for a time of 54.7 seconds. Ruggiero ran the 100-meter dash in 13.3 seconds.
Luber prevailed twice in field events, taking the pole vault (6 feet 6 inches) and pulling off a top long jump of 15 feet. Marini took the triple jump, going 31 feet 2 inches, as Heidi Stevens cleared 4 feet 2 inches and won the high jump.
Over in the boys meet, Alex Hatz needed just 2:02.2 to win at 800 meters and covered the mile in 4:49.7, while Jamal Johnson swept the sprints, taking the 100-meter dash in 11.1 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 23 seconds flat.
Paul Merriman broke the 10-minute mark in the 3,200-meter run in 9:59.5 and joined Hatz, Brendan Farrell and Andrew Roache in winning the 4×800 relay in 8:26.6. Ryan Janes, Louis Pascarella, Westley Wright and Connor Anderson worked together in the 4×100 relay, helping the Hornets win in 46.4 seconds.
WG prevailed in a majority of the field events, but Karl Thomson won the shot put of 43 feet 11 1/4 inches as Colin Anderson claimed the discus with a best throw of 129 feet 11 inches.
