Strong on both ends, the Fayetteville-Manlius indoor track and field teams earned a series of wins, including a total sweep of the girls distance races, during Wednesday night’s state qualifying meet at Manley Field House.
As a result, a large contingent of Hornet athletes will find themselves at Cornell University this Saturday for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship meet.
Jocelyn Richards and Courtney Chapman traded 1-2 finishes, with Richards taking the 3,000-meter run in a time of 10:07.67 just ahead of Chapman (10:07.92), and Chapman returning the favor in the 1,500 as she finished in 4:52.81 and Richards, in 4:52.91, was right behind.
Molly Malone, on her own, was victorious in the 1,000-meter run in 2:59.38, and she teamed with Mackenzie Carter, Hannah Luber and Kathryn Fanning to earn victory in the 4×800 relay in a clocking of 9:33.60, nearly 40 seconds ahead of the field.
Alex Seabury earned fourth in the long jump, going 16 feet 3 1/4 inches as she, Jessica Marini, Shannon McHugh and Lauren Ruggiero helped F-M finish third (1:50.54) in the 4×200 relay.
On the boys side, F-M’s Jamal Johnson won the 55-meter dash in 6.55 seconds to edge out Henninger teammates Greg Spears (6.57) and Andre Britton (6.69), though they all went under the state qualifying standard.
The same thing happened in the 300-meter dash, only Johnson finished second this time in 36.55 seconds, again reaching the state meet as Spears (36.18 seconds) won.
Alex Hatz had a dominant performance in the boys mile, going 4:20.05 to beat the field by nearly six full seconds. Andrew Roache got fourth in the 3,200-meter run in 9:57.51.
