With a bit more depth than anyone else, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys indoor track and field team went right to the top in the opening act of the 2007-08 season.
Unable to use Manley Field House until January, the Northstars — and everyone else — went to Hamilton College for last Saturdays CNYITA Kickoff Meet.
Once there, CNS earned 74 points, easily outdistancing Baldwinsville, who got second place with 46 points as Tully (36 points) got third place.
Three times, the Northstars came up with titles. On the oval, Jeff Azzoto, Devin Young, Vince St. James and Nathan MacNabb teamed up to take the 1,600 sprint medley relay title in a time of 3:52.05, more than five seconds clear of B’ville.
Over in the high jump, Andy Kahl cleared 6 feet 6 inches, half a foot better than anyone else, and combined with Devin Mertens (5 feet 6 inches) for the title. Craig Barber and T0ny Mitton went 1-2 in the pole vault, combining to clear 23 feet.
CNS also had a lot of other high finishes. MacNabb, Kevin Cusworth, Jake Whritenour and Shaun Hyde teamed up for a second in the distance medley relay (11:27.25), while Azzoto and Kahl helped Ben Brown and Brandon Marlow get second (5:07.2) in the 2,000 sprint medley.
Marlow and Whritenour joined Ty Howington and Mike Flume as CNS finished third in the 4×400 relay (3:52.25), and the Northstars were also third in the 55-meter hurdles (19.47 seconds) and second in the shot put (89 feet 10 inches).
With 52 points, the CNS girls team got second place in its version of the CNYITA Kickoff, a number only Liverpool (92 points) could top.
Monique Roberts cleared 5 feet 8 inches in the high jump, with Monique Roberts second at 5 feet 2 inches for a combined 11 feet and a victory in that event. McKaye Neumeister and Alana Hotchkiss swept the top two positions in the triple jump, combining to go 63 feet 4 1/2 inches.
CNS was also second (15 feet) in the pole vault and third (59 feet 3 1/2 inches) in the shot put, meaning it earned 34 of its 52 points in field events.
On the oval, Christina Sakowski, Schuyler Cary, Sarah Lounsbury and Nicole Gillette teamed to take second place in the 4×800 relay (10:52.34) behind Liverpool. Roberts and Campagna teamed for a runner-up finish in the 55-meter high hurdles with total times of 19.65 seconds.
