By taking every match from 160 pounds on up, the East Syracuse-Minoa wrestling team withstood a big challenge from Fowler last Wednesday night and earned a 36-28 victory over the Falcons.
More than half the Spartans’ points came from this group, including a pair of pins. Lawrence Piper, at 160 pounds, needed just 59 seconds to pin Quindell Palmer, while Corey Gerace (171 pounds) earned his pin of Tyshon Golden in 1:41.
At 189 pounds, Matt Cushing beat Dan Minton with a 17-1 technical fall, and Brett Adams (215 pounds) followed with a 14-2 rout of James Chaplin.
Back at the Phoenix Relays on Dec. 16, Mick Letcher had earned his 100th career win. He followed that up in the Fowler meet by pinning his 140-pound opponent, Daryl Becker, in 1:12, while Dustin Moss (145 pounds) got a 32-second pin over Jose Cirino. Matt Letcher, at 130 pounds, scraped past David Minney 2-0.
ESM was now 12-1, its lone blemish that narrow loss to Phoenix in the dual meet final. The Spartans will appear Wednesday and Thursday in the Brett Dixon Memorial Tournament at Central Square.
