Waiting through heaps of rain, the Christian Brothers Academy girls tennis team did not let the delay get to them.
Instead, when the Brothers finally got on the court for last Saturday’s Section III Class B final at Utica Parkway Courts, it took care of the Oneida Indians, winning a 5-2 decision to claim the title and stay undefeated at 16-0.
They were supposed to play the final on Thursday afternoon, but the monsoon-like rains caused the show to be pushed back twice.
CBA rested — then began its conquest Saturday with singles star Lianna Artessa, who took out Oneida star Aubrey Bobo in a 6-3, 6-1 sweep.
Caroline Tisdell earned another point in singles, beating Melanie Bobay 6-1, 7-5, while Edie Douglas dropped a 6-0, 6-2 decision to Brianne Bobo.
Over in doubles, CBA would go 3-1. Emily Norkett and Marissa Rotondo led the charge, beating Nikki Ano and Becky Adams 6-2, 6-2. Julie Thomson-Basha and Lauren Zalepeski earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kim Patricia and Alison Barbano.
In three sets, Meghan Murphy and Kristen Robinson rallied from behind to beat Breanna Allen and Bonnie Butler 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. Samantha Folsom and Kellie Scullin took a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Autumn McLain and Hannah Barley.
To reach the finals, the Brothers had to fight through last Monday’s Class B semifinal against Skaneateles. For the third time this season, CBA got the better of the Lakers, taking a 5-1 decision.
Artessa kicked off a singles sweep, beating Krissy Ryan 6-1, 6-3. Tisdell rolled past Amrita Deol 6-0, 6-3, while Douglas rallied past Emily Wood 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Over in the doubles matches that were completed before darkness set in, Norkett and Rotondo beat Megan Holleran and Katherine Hill 6-4, 6-2, with Murphy and Robinson getting past Anna Purcell and Vicky Curtis 6-3, 6-2. In three close sets, Folsom and Scullin lost to Leigh Ryan and Alexa Campanile 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
