About the only thing the Cazenovia football team did not do in last Saturday’s game at Altmar-Parish-Williamstown was lose focus while piling up the points.
In yet another awesome display of power and domination, the Lakers blanked an opponent for the third week in a row, this time a 61-0 destruction of the Rebels.
So in building a 5-0 record, Cazenovia has outscored its opponents 215-13, a display made even more remarkable by the fact that the starters on both sides have sat out long portions of the second half since the games were well in hand.
Justin Hubbard set the tone in the first quarter, dashing 54 yards to the end zone to put the Lakers on the board. It got to 13-0 when Brian Bartlett scored from three yards out.
The avalanche came in the second quarter, a 34-point barrage that began when Hubbard put it in the end zone a second time, this time on an 18-yard run. He added a one-yard TD plunge minutes later.
Cazenovia’s defense, in the midst of another overpowering effort, added points to the total when senior captain Tom Eschen returned an APW interception 27 yards for a touchdown.
By halftime, it was 47-0, and the first string was again on the bench. That didn’t keep Aaron Race and Gerry Riebe from adding TDs of their own in the third quarter.
And while this result was important, what Cazenovia did the night before might serve an even greater purpose.
Several Laker players made the trek to last Friday night’s first-place Class B West showdown between Westhill and Homer, getting a sneak preview of teams it might run into in the Section III playoffs later this month.
First, though, Cazenovia has to negotiate the rest of the regular season, including Saturday’s Homecoming game with Sherburne-Earlville that starts at 1:30 at Buckley-Volo Field. S-E is 0-5 and coming off a 29-6 home loss to South Jefferson, so the starters might have an early exit again.
