BALDWINSVILLE – Even as the Baldwinsville girls swim team was taking a 51-42 defeat to West Genesee in its last meet of March, the duo of Eva Smith and Ashley Konz both were quite successful.
Smith, who broke the school record in the 100-yard backstroke in a March 25 meet against Liverpool, raced in two other events against the Wildcats, but won them both.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Smith went two minutes, 6.15 seconds, well clear of the 2:15.90 from WG’s Allison Putnam, who would later prevail in the 500 freestyle.
Then, in the 100 butterfly, Smith again won by a big margin, her 1:07.14 more than 12 seconds better than the 1:19.17 from Adrianna Gill, who earlier had edged Madeline Sauro, 29.00 seconds to 29.60, in the 50 freestyle.
As for Konz, she was dominant in the 200 individual medley, finishing in 2:29.95 ahead of WG’s Anna Ivery, who posted 2:39.88 during a meet where she also was first in the 100 freestyle.
Also strong in the 100 backstroke, Konz finished in 1:04.70, a 1-2 Bees effort with Sauro second in 1:12.32. This came after a 200 medley relay where Konz, Smith, Sauro and Erin Gruppe prevailed in 2:10 flat to WG’s 2:12.
At the end of the meet, Konz, Gruppe, Smith and Sauro paired again, going 4:18.05 in the 400 freestyle relay to exactly match WG’s time for a dead heat.
During Thursday’s meet against Cicero-North Syracuse, the Bees lost, 51-42, but again Smith earned a pair of individual titles.
Going back to her specialty, the 100 backstroke, Smith finished in 1:00.22 ahead of Konz’s 1:02.91, this after a 100 butterfly where Smith prevailed in 1:04.42.
Konz got a title of her own in the 200 freestyle, posting a time of 2:05.86 as Sauro finished first in the 500 freestyle in 6:24.60. She also helped Smith, Konz and Gruppe beat C-NS, 2:06.33 to 2:07.59, in the 200 medley relay before that same quartet gained first place in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:09.02.
B’ville will swim twice next week, hosting Auburn Tuesday before traveling to Skaneateles on Thursday.
